Notes: A genus displaying remarkably high rates of endemism and localized ranges. Morphological diversity is high but reserved and unfortunately poorly understood, and characters of importance in recognizing species are not entirely settled upon. Although all but one species in North America are restricted to California, the presence of D. macswaini in the eastern Great Smoky Mountains hints at the potential for many more undiscovered species elsewhere in the continent.

Key to species (provided by Grant Wang)

1 a. Lateral sclerites of tergite 2 with posterior setae pair as with the rest of the trunk setae. --> D. macswaini
b. Lateral sclerites of tergite 2 with posterior setae pair bristle-like, usually furcate. --> 2

2 (1) a. Tergite 1 with surface distinctly reticulate. Spatulate setae of trunk with net-like layer so pronounced so as to appear deeply serrate. Lateral sclerites of tergite 2 with posterior setae pair 3 pronged, at least in 8 legged individuals --> D. sp.
b. Tergite 1 variously sculptured but never distinctly reticulate. Spatulate setae of trunk with net-like pattern not so pronounced, cratered. Lateral sclerites of tergite 2 with posterior setae pair 2 pronged, at least in 8 legged individuals --> 3

3 (2) a. Tergal side of head with anterior setae row of 4+4 setae --> D. sp.
b. Tergal side of head with anterior setae row of 3+3 setae --> 4

4 (3) a. Anteromedian pair of setae on tergite 5 in 8 legged individuals more rounded circular --> 5
b. Anteromedian pair of setae on tergite 5 in 8 legged individuals more pointed elliptical --> D. luteus

5 (4) a. Setae of tergal side of head smaller; setae of anterior row more slender, borne on small papillae. Trunk tergites finely pitted, otherwise weakly sculptured --> D. sp.
b. Setae of tergal side of head larger; setae of anterior row thick, borne on prononced papillae. Trunk tergites coarsely pitted and rugose --> D. magnus
